Moore County Towns
Aberdeen
Aberdeen is located in the southern part of Moore County. Its downtown area is located right near the intersection of Highway’s 1 and 5. Aberdeen, originally called Blue’s Crossing is very much a historic town; its original residents, the Scottish Highlanders—among the first settlers in all of Moore County—settled the area around 1850. In later years it became well known as a railroad town and for its industry and manufacturing. Today, in addition to homes located in and around the original downtown area, newer homes and townhomes are sprouting up in subdivisions throughout the town. Aberdeen measures a little over 9 square miles and has a population of almost 5,000.
Cameron
Cameron is a very small rural town located in the northern part of Moore County above Vass, very close to the Moore County/Lee County border. It’s only a little over 1 square mile and has a population south of 200. Today it is known for its historic downtown area and for its antique shops. Understandably you will not find many listings at any given time when searching for properties in Cameron. However, if you’re looking for a single family home with more acreage (and for a residence close to Fayetteville/Fort Bragg) you’ll want to look at available homes in Cameron.
Carthage
Carthage, the county seat of Moore County and oldest town (settled in the mid 1700’s by Scottish immigrants), is located in the northwestern part of the county. The historic downtown area is located just west of Highway 15/501 on Route 24/27. The population of Carthage is about 2,100 and it measures approximately 6 square miles. You’ll find a good number of homes with larger lots on rural roads. There are also several new subdivisions sprouting up in Carthage, a trend that will likely continue with the expected growth in military families in Moore County. It’s a bit further from Fort Bragg than Vass or Cameron, but only by about 10 minutes.
Foxfire Village
Foxfire Village is a small rural community located midway between Pinehurst and the West End/Seven Lakes area. The village was originally incorporated as a golf resort community in 1974. It has a population of around 600 and measures about 6 square miles. Buyers who are looking for a country setting and larger lot sizes should give consideration to Foxfire. Many local real estate brokers are projecting significant growth in Foxfire over the next 5-10 years.
Pinebluff
Located just south of Aberdeen, you will find the small town of Pinebluff. Originally developed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as a winter resort for northerners by one of the founders of Southern Pines. Though there was considerable resort (hotels) and residential growth in its early years, the town never became what its original founders envisioned. Today, it remains a small town of approximately 1,200 residents. Pinebluff measures about 2.5 square miles. There has been a fair amount of new construction in Pinebluff in recent years. Home searchers will find single family homes (many in small subdivisions) and quite a few manufactured homes on the market in Pinebluff.

Pinehurst
Once known as ‘The Golf Capital of the World,” Pinehurst is still recognized as one this country’s oldest and most beloved golf towns. In addition to the quaint Village of Pinehurst and famous Donald Ross designed courses at Pinehurst Country Club, the town continues to be the main attraction for visitors inside Moore County. Today, in addition to the constant supply of retirees who decide to call Pinehurst home, Pinehurst is seeing an increase in younger families. Home options in Pinehurst include single family homes as well as condominiums and townhomes. Not surprisingly, there are plenty of golf front properties and subdivisions—some of them gated. There are also a fair number of water front and water view properties.
Seven Lakes/West End
Seven Lakes is an unincorporated lake and golf community developed in the 1970’s, comprised largely of three gated communities, located in the community of West End, NC. The combined population of these areas totals about 4,000. Seven Lakes (actually home to 8 lakes!) measures about 8 square miles. The majority of properties available for sale in these areas are single family homes located in the three gated communities in Seven Lakes: Seven Lakes North, South and West. There are also a small number of condos/townhomes in Seven Lakes. Outside of the Seven Lakes area in West End you will mostly find single family rural homes, equestrian properties and farms. You’ll also find McClendon Hills, a very popular equestrian/lake gated community in West End, about a mile or so west of Seven Lakes on Highway 211.

Residences in the town of Southern Pines include properties in the historic downtown (Broad Street) area, traditional rural subdivisions and single family homes, condominium/townhome subdivisions, farms and equestrian properties. Southern Pines measures over 16 square miles and has a population of about 12,000. It is probably the most conveniently located town in Moore County. You’re close to the county’s most popular shopping areas and restaurants. It also positions you in a good place to take advantage of a well traveled shortcut to Fayetteville and Fort Bragg.

The town of Vass is located in the eastern part of the county, very close to Fort Bragg. In addition to many country homes, you’ll find the Woodlake community—a large gated golf and lake community. Vass is a small town with many rural roads; it measures around 3 square miles and its total population is about 800.
